OTA AGM
The Annual General Meeting of the OTA was held on April 17th at the Rexall Centre. More than 100 club Presidents and representatives attended this event.Sponsors were on hand to show their products to the participants in the meeting.

Two significant changes were approved at the meeting. The first was the introduction of a junior membership fee for clubs in 2011. This was deemed appropriate because many of the programs run by the OTA benefit juniors and the fee enables the association to deliver auditable junior participation numbers to support grant applications. The second was the approval of a membership fee increase in 2011. It has been more than 15 years since OTA club membership fees have been increased.

After the formal meeting Gillian Turnbull of Kingston Tennis Club (see photo) and Frank Cooper of Ajax Tenis Club accepted awards on behalf of their clubs to recognize the quality and variety of their club programming.

After lunch, two educational sessions were held. The first was delivered by Emily Heuts and Ian Amondsen of Marsh Canada outlining the changes and improvements in the new OTA Insurance Program. The second session discussed the pros and cons of incorporation for tennis clubs.

Love Match Event in Scarborough
They say that tennis begins With “Love”… but the idea behind this new program was that love might begin with tennis.

On Saturday, February 20th, the Scarborough Tennis Federation (STF) held their first “Love Match: Tennis Speed Dating for Singles” event, at the Tam Heather Curling & Tennis Club.

The event attracted 32 Singles (16 men, 16 women), who played 15 minute rounds of doubles with various partners.

When the Singles were off court, they had the opportunity to mix and mingle.

“The event was a great success, and I witnessed the exchanging of phone numbers!” said Dianne Weatherby, Vice President, Events, STF.

Due to popular demand, the STF plans to make this an annual event!

Volunteers of the Month
Lezlie Murch Recognized at OTA AGM

Lezlie Murch was recognized for her contribution to tennis in Ontario with an OTA Regional Award at the recent AGM. Lezlie is pictured here with Michel Lecavalier, OTA President and Wayne Saigeon, Chair, South West Association of Tennis.

In 1997, Lezlie established the Niagara Academy of Tennis - now the Niagara Academy of Sports since Golf and Rowing specialties are available at the Academy. The purpose of the school is to nurture young student athletes, while striving for academic and athletic excellence.

In February Lezlie was presented with the Innovative Small Business award at the Niagara Entrepreneur of the Year event at the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel. The award was for the Niagara entrepreneur who demonstrated innovative activity resulting in a successful small business.

The academy voluntarily runs many OTA sanctioned and regional events each year to promote tennis in the Niagara area. Canadian Alumni of the Academy include Frank Dancevic, current # 1 Canadian men's singles player; Zachary White, 2009 U18 National Champion; Monika Dancevic, NCAA Champion player for University of Miami; and Bruno Agostinelli, Davis Cup Player attending Kentucky University.

Congratulations, Lezlie!

In Memorium - Klaus Bindhardt

The Ontario Tennis Association was saddened to hear of the passing of 2004 Distinguished Service Award winner and OTA President from 1973-1976, Klaus Bindhardt, on April 2nd at the age of 84.

Klaus was instrumental in formalizing the regional structure of the OTA. He also promoted the creation of community tennis clubs by encouraging local municipal councils to adopt a club system on public courts – the basis of the Association’s strong tennis communities today.

Klaus spent more than 30 years as a tennis advocate and volunteer. In 1968 he was President of the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club when it hosted the first Canadian Open. He then served as co-chair of the Canadian Open, now the Rogers Cup, from 1969 to 1975. He was also involved in the planning and development of the first National Tennis Centre at York University. In 1996, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Canadian Tennis in recognition of his lifelong commitment to the sport.

Klaus Bindhardt’s tennis legacy stands as an inspiration to all tennis volunteers, regardless of the level at which they serve.

In Memorium - John Hunt

It is with great sadness that we announce that on April 3, 2010 John Hunt passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer.

John will be remembered by his family and friends for his passion for tennis and watercolour painting. He was the President of the Leaside Tennis Club 1968-1970 and 2006- 2009. He was also a great support to his wife Sheila in her long time role as a volunteer for the Toronto Ladies Tennis League.
